Academician Engages the Public in Exploring Deep-Sea Mysteries, Sowing the Seeds of “Scientific Aspiration Toward the Ocean”

On August 24, 2025, the 229th session of the Shanghai Science Communication Forum Series and the 106th session of the Academician and Expert Lecture Series were held in the lecture hall of SNHM. Professor Jian Zhimin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science at Tongji University, was invited to deliver a popular science lecture titled “Mysteries of the Deep Blue: Exploring the Technological Frontiers of the Deep Ocean.”

In his lecture, Academician Jian Zhi introduced the significant scientific value of deep-sea research and the latest progress in China’s deep-sea technology. He pointed out that the drilling vessel “Dream” has been commissioned, the manned submersible “Fendouzhe” is in operation, and the subsea scientific observation network is about to be fully connected. These milestones signify that China has achieved internationally advanced technological capabilities in “deep-sea access, deep-sea exploration, and deep-sea development,” and has established a globally competitive strategic force in deep-sea science and technology.
