Shanghai Astronomy Museum Started the Special Activity of "Together with Dark Sky Reserve" in Dark Sky Month

On April 16, 2023, during the International Dark Sky Week, Shanghai Astronomy Museum launched the special activity of "Together with Dark Sky Reserve" in International Dark Sky Month. In forms of Galaxy Rostrum, live-stream outdoor, in-depth tour, picture book stories and research projects, the activity further popularized the concept of night ecological environment protection, improved the public's awareness and participation in the protection of dark sky, and explored the harmonious coexistence between city and nature. 

On the day of the Activity, Ruskin Hartley, Executive Chairman of International Dark-Sky Association, Mei Lin, Founder of Xichong International Dark Sky Community, Liu Chengze, Associate Researcher of School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Guo Fei, Head of Shanghai Branch of International Dark-Sky Association were invited to the branding column "Galaxy Rostrum" of Shanghai Astronomy Museum from different fields of astronomy education, ecological protection, landscape design and social economy to face up to the problems and think about the dark sky reserve scheme with considerations of dark sky reserve and urban development. 

Shanghai Astronomy Museum capitalized on its own advantages and strengthened the two-way efforts of scientific research and scientific innovation to provide scientific basis and technical support for dark sky reserve and seek scientific solutions to reduce light pollution. The museum has participated in the research on various projects. Besides, it will carry out the scientific innovation practice project of Urban Light Pollution Investigation jointly with the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai Nanhui Middle School, guide the students of astronomy societies in universities and middle schools jointly with tutors from third-party institutions and carry out research study for teenagers to improve their awareness of dark sky reserve and scientific literacy. 

As a warm-up for the Dark Sky Month series activity, the museum launched a new branding activity "Star Partner" picture book story-telling session for children on April 1. With the first theme of Looking for the Lost Dark Sky, children were led into the astronomical world in illustrations in the form of "Picture Book Reading + Hand Making" to improve children's awareness and interest in dark sky reserve.
