Award Ceremony of the Bismuth & Beauty: Science and Art Competition Concludes Successfully

On May 22, 2025, the award ceremony of the Bismuth & Beauty: Science and Art Competition was held at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST). Co-organized by the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM), USST, and the Shanghai Science Innovation Education Steering Committee, the competition centered on the metallic element bismuth, gathering creative works that boosted the deep integration of science and technology with humanities and art.

The competition has received widespread response from all sectors of society since its launch in June last year. It called for submissions from schools at all levels and the general public, covering various art forms including music, logo designs, painting and photography, sculpture and crafts, creative handwork, and poetry and prose. Participants took inspiration from bismuth-containing metals, crystals, compounds, new materials, new technologies and new applications to create a series of outstanding works that embody the beauty of chemical elements, physical objects, and science and technology. According to statistics, the competition received more than 260 entries from across the country, fully demonstrating the public’s enthusiasm and creativity for the integration of science and art.

The winning works include exquisite sculptures based on the unique forms of bismuth crystals, which visually present the beauty of science through artistic interpretation; essays and poems exploring bismuth’s potential applications, which showcase the authors’ imaginative visions for future technological development; and photos and paintings capturing bismuth’s charm in various contexts, which offer refreshing perspectives. These works not only demonstrate the participants’ solid artistic skills but also reflect their profound understanding and unique insights into bismuth science. Selected outstanding works will have the opportunity to be published in relevant newspapers and media outlets, and exhibited at the SSTM, further amplifying their science communication value.
