To commemorate the outstanding contributions of Mr. Nan Rendong, the “father of the ‘China Sky Eye,’” and to vigorously promote the spirit of scientists in the new era, the “Meet @ Scientists - Tribute to Nan Rendong” special event, jointly hosted by the SSTM and the Shanghai Science Education Development Foundation, along with the 235th session of the Shanghai Science Communication Forum, was successfully held on the afternoon of February 26 at the lecture hall of SSTM.

The museum specially invited a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to present birthday cards, scientists’ messages, and customized cultural and creative commemorative gifts from “Meet @ Scientists” to 30 lucky audience members who share the same birthday as Mr. Nan Rendong, followed by a group photo to mark the occasion.

Titled “Gazing at the Starry Sky in the Mountains of Guizhou,” the science lecture guided the audience in uncovering the scientific rationale behind the site selection of the “China Sky Eye.” It introduced how the team employed remote sensing technology, geographic information systems, and global positioning systems, combined with arduous field investigations, to carry out site selection over more than a decade, thereby laying a solid foundation for the construction of the “China Sky Eye.” The lecture also shared the latest scientific research progress and discoveries of the “China Sky Eye,” sparking enthusiastic questions and interaction among the audience.

After the lecture, 30 audience members who share the same birthday as Nan Rendong participated in an immersive science experience, the “China Sky Eye” model DIY activity. Under the guidance of science instructors, they assembled the models by hand, experiencing the advanced technologies of great power through practice and gaining insight into the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication upheld by scientists.
