SSTM Collaborates with Nuclear Institutes to Host “Meeting with the Scientist”—A Special Tribute Event Honoring Academician Wang Chengshu
On June 21, 2025, SSTM successfully held its flagship education program “Meeting with the Scientist”—a special tribute event honoring Academician Wang Chengshu. Thirty lucky participants who share the same birthday with the renowned nuclear physicist, gathered to experience the profound spirit of Wang through documentary viewing, messages from scientists, science lectures, and guided exhibition tours. The event was co-organized with Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute Co., Ltd. and the Institute of Nuclear and Physicochemical Engineering. Audiences from other cities including Changzhou and Nanjing also joined this inspiring celebration of science and culture.
The event began with a group screening of a documentary about Academician Wang Chengshu, produced by the Research Institute of Physical and Chemical Engineering of Nuclear Industry. The film vividly portrayed the extraordinary life of the renowned “Heroine of China’s First Atomic Bomb Explosion,” emphasizing the three defining moments when she declared, “I’m willing.” During the science lecture session, Professor Liu Tong drew on rare historical footage to recount the remarkable life of Academician Wang, honored as “Heroine of China’s First Atomic Bomb Explosion.” The lecture also led the audience to explore the fundamental question—"What is nuclear?”—and shed light on the mysteries of nuclear radiation. Participants gained a deep understanding of the principles behind nuclear energy and radiation protection, while also envisioning the future of nuclear technology and reflecting on the power of science to transform the world.
The success of the event not only served as a contemporary interpretation of the “Two Bombs and One Satellite” spirit, but also marked an innovative effort by SSTM to explore new models of science communication during its temporary closure for renovation.
