Special Event on "Science Travel · Technological Innovation Principal Space Station" into Mogao Caves Successfully Organized
On the afternoon of May 21, 2024, SSTM brand activity "Science Travel · Technological Innovation Principal Space Station" made a brilliant appearance in Dunhuang Mogao Caves, bringing astronomy technological innovation education courses to the teenagers of Dun Huang Middle School.
This event was under the theme of "From Dunhuang Star Chart to Wandering Earth." Professor Mao Shude of the Department of Astronomy of Tsinghua University was invited to give a keynote speech. His speech started from the ancient Dunhuang star chart to explain the birth and evolution of planets, stars and other celestial bodies, their "wandering" journeys in the vast space and time of the universe, and the process of discovery by human beings. He encouraged teenagers to not only inherit and safeguard Dunhuang's unique cultural treasures, but also strive to learn modern scientific and technological knowledge, and to expand their horizons and abilities from an interdisciplinary perspective. After the speech, Mr. Liu Jian, Deputy Curator of SSTM, presented Professor Mao with the "Chief Advisor of the Technological Innovation Principal Space Station" award.
During the dialogue of "Curator's Appointment," three experts and scholars from the field of heritage conservation, astronomy research and museum education including Su Bomin, President of Dunhuang Academy, Professor Mao Shude of the Department of Astronomy of Tsinghua University and Ni Minjing, Curator of SSTM explored the convergence of technology and cultural heritage against the backdrop of Dunhuang cultural heritage and innovation. They shared their views on how to protect, inherit and revitalize the use of Dunhuang Mogao Caves and other cultural heritage through emerging technologies, and how to tap into the elements of science and technology in cultural heritage to promote science education for the youth.
