In order to implement Xi Jinping’s thoughts on ecological civilization and guide young people to develop their concern to urban ecological development and actively participate in the construction of beautiful China, on February 20, 2024, Shanghai Natural History Museum joined hands with the Science and Technology Association of Hongkou District, Shanghai, Education Bureau of Hongkou District, and Youth Center of Hongkou District, to carry out the first activity of "Protecting Nature in the City".

Closely integrated with the resources of Shanghai Natural History Museum's exhibition area, the event allowed youths to understand Shanghai's typical wetland ecosystem and the impact of human activities on Shanghai's urban ecosystem through scenario-based and immersive course experiences and lectures by experts from the Natural History Research Center. At the same time, students participating online also watched the "Chinese Rare Species" documentary series Aurora Crow and the "Chinese Dream of Scientific Research" series documentary Blocking Spartina Alterniflora and Saving Hairy Crabs.  The students also had heated discussions on topics such as the future urban concept of Shanghai, biodiversity protection, urban ecological protection, and the relationship between man and nature, and gained a deeper understanding of Shanghai's urban ecological development.
